Labor Day (US & Canada)

Monday September 2

The very first U.S. Labor Day parade took place in 1882 to call attention to the contributions of workers. Now we carry on this tradition of celebrating our hard work with a holiday on the first Monday of September.

On September 7th, 1822 Brazil claimed its independence from Portugal. Now, Brazil’s Independence Day is considered a public day and is celebrated with outings, picnics, air shows, parades, and musical concerts.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Sunday September 15 – Tuesday October 15

From September 15 to October 15 each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions and cultural diversity of Hispanic/Latino/Latinx Americans whose heritage is rooted in 20 Latin American countries and territories: Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

Gender Equality Week (Canada)

Sunday September 22 – Saturday September 28

Gender Equality Week is an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions that women and gender diverse communities have made to the growth, development, character and identity of Canada; to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments made in advancing gender equality; and to reconfirm commitment to address persistent gender equality gaps in Canada. Gender Equality Week is the result of the passing of Bill C-309, the Gender Equality Week Act, which received Royal Assent on June 21, 2018.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Canada)

Monday September 30

Also known as Orange Shirt Day (observed since 2013), September 30th was declared a statutory holiday in 2021-part of a country-wide response to the tragic discovery at Kamloops Indian Residential School. This day honors Indigenous survivors, families, and communities; and brings public acknowledgement to the tragic legacy of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools, as a part of the ongoing process of reconciliation.
