LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the US. This month also recognizes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and many others who comprise this vibrant global community–and their impact on history locally, nationally, and internationally. Festivities include parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and events which attract millions of participants around the world. We wish you a safe and joyful Pride month!
National Safety Month
Saturday June 1 – Sunday June 30
Observed annually, National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of accidents at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities.
Festa Junina
Saturday June 1 – Sunday June 30
Summer is just beginning for our offices in the northern hemisphere, but for Brazil, it’s the harvest season, and that means one thing: Festa Junina! Festivities include bonfires, dressing in traditional rural clothing, and dancing the quadrilha to mark the end of summer, celebrate the harvest, and commemorate several Catholic saints.
Dia dos Namorados
Wednesday June 12
Love is in the air! June 12 is “Lover’s Day,” the Brazilian analog to Valentine’s Day. (But is it similarly followed by half-price chocolate day?)
Father’s Day
Sunday June 16
When does a joke become a dad joke? When it becomes apparent!
Juneteenth
Wednesday June 19
Juneteenth nationally commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official two and a half years earlier, but had little impact until Union forces arrived to enforce the law and overcome resistance.
Women in Engineering Day
Sunday June 23
International Women in Engineering Day on June 23rd celebrates the work and achievements of women around in the world in the field of engineering, and calls the world to action in encouraging women to pursue careers in engineering. To all our women engineers, we thank you for your contributions to our mission.
